Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral Gomel (Belarus)

Weather…

The Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral in Gomel is a preeminent example of Neoclassical architecture in Belarus, constructed between 1809 and 1819. The project was commissioned by Count Nikolay Rumyantsev, a prominent statesman and patron of the arts who significantly shaped Gomel's urban landscape. Designed by the British architect John Clark, the cathedral features a grand central dome and four-column Doric porticoes that exude imperial dignity. It is strategically situated on a high embankment of the Sozh River, serving as the spiritual anchor of the Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble. During the Soviet era, the building housed a museum of scientific atheism until its restoration to the Orthodox Church in the late 1980s. Today, it remains the principal Orthodox sanctuary of the Gomel region and holds the revered relics of Saint Maniufa of Gomel. The cathedral's pristine white facade and harmonious proportions continue to represent the zenith of 19th-century ecclesiastical design in Eastern Europe.
