Founded in 1685 by Russian Old Believers fleeing religious persecution in the Tsardom of Russia, the town rapidly grew into a major spiritual and artistic hub for the Old Believer movement. It became renowned for its distinct styles of icon painting and intricate wood carving. The Vetka Museum of Old Belief and Belarusian Traditions now houses one of Eastern Europe's most significant collections of ancient manuscripts, icons, and traditional textiles.
