Vetka, situated on the banks of the Sozh River in the Gomel Region, is a unique cultural and historical enclave in Belarus. Founded in 1685 by Russian Old Believers fleeing religious persecution in the Tsardom of Russia, the town rapidly grew into a major spiritual and artistic hub for the Old Believer movement. It became renowned for its distinct styles of icon painting and intricate wood carving. The Vetka Museum of Old Belief and Belarusian Traditions now houses one of Eastern Europe's most significant collections of ancient manuscripts, icons, and traditional textiles. The town's architecture retains traces of traditional wooden craftsmanship, particularly in the elaborately carved window frames known as 'nalichniki.' Despite the severe impact of the Chernobyl disaster on the surrounding region, Vetka continues to be a vital center for the preservation and study of Slavic heritage. Today, it stands as a symbol of religious resilience and a sanctuary for centuries-old folk traditions.
