Ancient Turov (Belarus)

Weather…

Turov is one of the oldest and most historically significant towns in Belarus, first mentioned in the Primary Chronicle in the year 980. The town once functioned as the thriving capital of a powerful principality and a central hub of East Slavic Orthodox culture. The famous theologian and writer Cyril of Turov, one of the most prominent intellectuals of Kievan Rus', worked here. The archaeological zone of the town houses the impressive foundations of a massive stone cathedral destroyed in the 12th century, which testify to the former greatness of the settlement. Turov is also widely famous for its mystical growing stone crosses located in the town's Borisoglebskoye cemetery, which believers claim become warmer and rise out of the earth over time.
