Stary Zhaden Reserve (Belarus)

Weather…

The Stary Zhaden Nature Reserve is an isolated and extremely hard-to-reach wetland deep in the Pripyat depression (Polesie), which, due to the lack of roads and human settlement, is considered one of the least disturbed ecosystems in the entire country. This massive, open transition mire is a paradise of raw, untamed beauty, dominated by endless expanses of water, rare Sphagnum mosses, and scattered birch islands. Scientifically, Stary Zhaden is of invaluable worth for the research of the European herpetofauna; the absence of anthropogenic noise and agricultural chemicals has allowed for an unprecedented density and diversity of amphibians and reptiles here. Particularly for the moor frog and rare natterjack toads, this intact mire is an essential, global core habitat.
