Zhitkavichy, located in the deep south of Belarus in the Gomel Region, is a city that primarily serves as the gateway to one of the country's most vital nature reserves. The city is situated in the immediate vicinity of the Pripyatsky National Park, a vast protected area of pristine swamps, floodplains, and primeval forests along the Pripyat River, often referred to as the 'lungs of Europe.' Consequently, ecotourism is a rapidly growing economic sector in the region. Historically and industrially, however, Zhitkavichy only truly developed in the 19th century following the construction of the railway line. The city's economy relies heavily on the natural resources of the Polesia region: peat extraction, wood processing, and agriculture form the backbone of this tranquil, nature-bound settlement.
