Shirvan, known until 2008 as Ali Bayramli, lies on the right bank of the Kura River in the vast Kura-Aras Lowland of central Azerbaijan and has around eighty thousand inhabitants. The town was founded in the 1930s during the exploitation of nearby oil fields and developed into a significant hub of oil extraction and the energy sector, the adjacent Shirvan thermal power plant remains one of the largest in Azerbaijan. Today Shirvan is a key node for rail and road transport heading towards Iran and the southern regions. Notable attractions include the spacious Heydar Aliyev Park, the History Museum and the nearby Shirvan National Park, where the rare goitered gazelle has found a sanctuary. The surrounding steppes are also famous for their mud volcanoes and rich bird life.
