The Gulistan Fortress in Shamakhi is one of the most significant defensive structures of the medieval Shirvan state. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries atop a steep rocky peak, it served as a vital sanctuary for the Shirvanshah rulers during times of foreign invasion. The fortress was strategically designed to be nearly impregnable, successfully withstanding sieges by Seljuks, Mongols, and Safavids over the centuries. Within its walls, the complex housed palace buildings, granaries, and sophisticated water systems to sustain defenders during prolonged conflicts. A secret underground passage carved into the rock connected the fortress to a nearby riverbed, ensuring a secure water supply and an escape route. The catastrophic earthquake of 1192 severely damaged the fortress, prompting the relocation of the capital from Shamakhi to Baku. Today, the ruins of its mighty towers and ramparts offer a glimpse into the military prowess of the Shirvan-Absheron architectural school and provide commanding views of the surrounding landscape.
