Altyaghach National Park (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

Altyaghach National Park was established in 2004, covering an area of 11,035 hectares within the Khizi and Siazan districts of Azerbaijan. The park was created to protect the temperate deciduous forest ecosystems of the southeastern Greater Caucasus mountains and to prevent soil erosion in the region. Its landscape is characterized by dense forests of beech, hornbeam, and ash trees, interspersed with mountain streams and rocky outcrops. The park serves as a critical sanctuary for wildlife, including the Caucasian tur, roe deer, brown bears, and various birds of prey. Notably, it houses a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, the only facility of its kind in the country, dedicated to treating and reintroducing injured animals back into the wild. With its proximity to the capital city, Baku, it has become a significant hub for ecotourism and environmental education. Visitors can enjoy several hiking trails that offer panoramic views of the rugged mountain terrain and the lush greenery of the Caucasian foothills.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time to visit this forested park is from late spring to early autumn, when the weather is mild and nature is in full bloom. During these months, the rehabilitated birds of prey and other wildlife are typically most active.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning or late afternoon are usually the optimal times for observing the natural behavior of the local fauna. Midday heat often causes animals to retreat deep into the forested areas to seek shade and rest.
📜
Etiquette
Visitors must maintain a respectful distance from all wildlife, especially the birds of prey undergoing rehabilitation. Feeding the animals is strictly prohibited, and maintaining low noise levels is crucial to avoid causing them stress.
🎒
What to bring
Bring a good pair of binoculars to safely observe the raptors and other distant creatures without disturbing their environment. Sturdy hiking shoes are also highly recommended for navigating the varied terrain of the forest trails.
🧭
Getting there
The national park is generally accessible by car from major nearby towns, though some inner roads may be unpaved or rough. It is often advisable to check local conditions or arrange for a guided transport service if you are unfamiliar with the region.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife observation requires plenty of patience, as the animals roam freely in dense woodland habitats. Take your time, sit quietly at designated viewing spots, and remember that spotting rare species is never guaranteed.
