Khachmaz sits on Azerbaijan's northern coast just a few kilometres from the Russian border and the Caspian shore, and with almost forty thousand inhabitants it is the centre of one of the most important agricultural districts in the country. The vast orchards and vegetable gardens produce tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, apples and rosehips; the district stretches towards the Caucasus, encompassing climatic zones from the subtropical lowland to cool mountain forests. On the nearby Caspian coast lies the famous resort of Nabran, with kilometres of sandy beaches, dense oak forests and numerous summer hotels, which is a popular destination for Azerbaijani families and tourists from Russia. Notable city sights include the Juma Mosque, the local history museum and the central bazaar with its rich offer of seasonal fruit and vegetables from the region.
