Tiroler Lech Nature Park (Austria)

Weather…

The Tiroler Lech Nature Park in the Reutte district protects one of the last wild river landscapes in the Northern Alps. The core of the 41-square-kilometre protected area is the Lech River, with its extensive gravel banks and characteristic wild river branching. This dynamism constantly creates new habitats for specialized species such as the German tamarisk, which has one of its most significant occurrences in Central Europe here. The park was officially recognized as a nature park in 2004 and is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The diversity of habitats ranges from alpine rivers and alluvial forests to dry floodplains, housing an enormous variety of species, including over 1,100 flowering plants and rare birds like the little ringed plover. Visitors can explore the region on the Lechweg, a long-distance hiking trail along the river, or at the 'Tiroler Lech' visitor centre in Weißenbach. The nature park is an outstanding example of preserving natural flowing water dynamics and serves as an important recreation area.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The river landscape is typically accessed from the numerous villages bordering the Lech, which are connected by a well-established regional road network.
📅
Best season
Late spring and summer are broadly considered the best times to witness the dynamic river flow and explore the extensive gravel banks under pleasant conditions.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The paths are largely flat and follow the natural contours of the wild river, passing over smooth gravel banks and through adjacent riparian forests.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy walking shoes are important for traversing the loose stones on the gravel banks, while a windbreaker is often useful against the breezes along the riverbed.
🅿️
Parking
Designated parking areas are typically available in the adjacent municipalities or near specific designated observation points along the main river course.
⚠️
Safety
