Imst Carnival with its famous Schemenlaufen procession is UNESCO World Heritage, the great Schemenlaufen takes place every four years, while smaller carnival customs mark the season each year.
Imst is located in the Tyrolean Oberland at the mouth of the Gurgl Valley into the Inn Valley and is renowned for its rich traditions and scenic beauty. Its settlement history reaches back to the Bronze Age, with the town first documented in the year 763. In the Middle Ages, Imst flourished through silver and lead mining, which brought prosperity and grand burgher houses to the community. A unique cultural highlight is the Imster Schemenlaufen, a traditional carnival custom recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The town is often called the 'City of Fountains' because more than 40 historic fountains adorn its streets. Besides the historical old town, the Rosengartenschlucht, a memorable natural monument located right in the town center, attracts numerous visitors. Today, Imst serves as a major educational and administrative hub in the Tyrolean Oberland and is a favored base for alpine sports.
