Hall in Tirol is one of Austria's best-preserved medieval towns, located in the Inn Valley just east of Innsbruck. The city owed its historical wealth to salt production, which began in the 13th century, and the relocation of the princely mint from Meran to Hall in 1477. It was here in 1486 that the first 'Taler' was struck, the precursor to the modern dollar, bringing Hall worldwide numismatic significance. Hasegg Castle, with its prominent Mint Tower, dominates the cityscape and currently houses the Hall Mint Museum. The old town is one of the largest in Tyrol, characterized by winding alleys, magnificent townhouses, and the Upper Town Square featuring the town hall. In addition to its history as a city of coins and salt, Hall was also a vital transshipment point for trade on the Inn River. Today, the city blends its rich heritage with a modern campus for the UMIT private university and a lively cultural scene. Despite its proximity to the regional capital Innsbruck, Hall has retained its distinct character as a historic merchant city and cultural jewel.
