Xaysimo Forest

The Xaysimo Forest is located in the mountainous Sanaag region of northern Somalia and is one of the country's most valuable ecosystems. This area is world-famous for the production of high-quality frankincense and myrrh, derived from the resins of the Boswellia and Commiphora trees that grow here. The landscape is characterized by rugged limestone mountains and deep valleys that benefit from a microclimate created by moist winds blowing from the Indian Ocean. Since antiquity, this forest was part of the legendary Incense Route, connecting the Horn of Africa with the Roman Empire and Egypt. Today, the forest remains a primary source of income for local communities, who pass down the knowledge of sustainable resin harvesting through generations. Despite its economic significance, the forest is endangered by climate change and unsustainable harvesting practices, requiring increased conservation efforts. The biodiversity, besides resin trees, includes numerous bird and reptile species adapted to the arid mountain climate.
