Wattens is an important market town in the North Tyrolean Lower Inn Valley, situated at an altitude of 564 meters on the right bank of the Inn River. The geographical location between the Tux Alps in the south and the Karwendel mountains in the north significantly shapes the landscape. Historically, the place was first mentioned in documents around 930 as Vuattanes, indicating early settlement. A decisive turning point in the town's history was 1559, when the first paper mill was built, laying the foundation for its industrial tradition. However, Wattens achieved worldwide fame through Daniel Swarovski, who founded the crystal cutting company of the same name in 1895. The town's architecture is a blend of traditional Tyrolean elements and modern industrial buildings. The most famous structure is the Swarovski Crystal Worlds, which opened in 1995 for the company's centenary. Economically, the municipality is almost entirely shaped by the crystal industry and the Wattenspapier paper factory, which is one of the world's leading manufacturers of specialty papers. With over 8,000 inhabitants, Wattens has excellent infrastructure and serves as a regional center for education and culture in the Innsbruck Land district. The municipality is also an important hub for tourism in the Hall-Wattens region.
