The Kitzsteinhorn is a 3,203-meter mountain in the Glockner Group of the High Tauern, situated above Kaprun in the state of Salzburg. It gained worldwide fame as Austria's first glacier ski resort, which opened in 1965. The mountain is accessed by a modern cable car infrastructure that carries visitors to 'Gipfelwelt 3000,' a viewing platform offering vistas of Austria's highest peaks, including the Großglockner. Geologically, the Kitzsteinhorn belongs to the schist mantle of the Tauern Window, with its silvery, shimmering calcareous mica schists responsible for its striking appearance. The glaciers on the Kitzsteinhorn, such as the Schmiedingerkees, provide year-round opportunities for mountain sports, although they also face significant retreat due to warming. Historically, the town of Kaprun is closely linked to the pioneering hydroelectric power plant construction of the post-war era, which transformed the region both touristically and economically.
