Kufstein, often celebrated as the 'Pearl of Tyrol', is a historic fortress city situated on the Inn River, directly on the border with Bavaria. Its undisputed landmark is the Kufstein Fortress, first documented in 1205, which for centuries served as a strategic site for military conflicts between Tyrol, Bavaria, and Austria. The fortress houses the famous Heroes' Organ (Heldenorgel), the world's largest open-air organ, whose music can be heard daily far beyond the city limits. The old town, particularly the Römerhofgasse, captivates visitors with traditional Tyrolean architecture and cozy inns. Economically, Kufstein is a significant location, characterized by the Riedel Glas manufacturing plant and its role as a vital hub for rail and road traffic across the Alps. Tucked away between the Kaiser Mountains and local peaks, the city is a hub for mountain sports and outdoor activities. Kufstein uniquely combines medieval flair with modern infrastructure and a lively university scene, giving the city a dynamic atmosphere.
