Oberwart, called Felsőőr in Hungarian, is the capital of the district of the same name in Burgenland. The city is located in the Pinka Valley at an altitude of 273 meters and forms the central hub of southern Burgenland. Geographically, the region is characterized by the gentle hills of the East Styrian-Burgenland borderland. A special feature of Oberwart is its ethnic diversity; the city has been a center of the Burgenland Hungarian ethnic group for centuries, which is still reflected today in the bilingual school system and cultural life. Historically, Oberwart was part of the Kingdom of Hungary before it came to Austria in 1921. The city's architecture shows a mixture of historical townhouses and modern functional buildings that emphasize its status as an administrative and economic center. Oberwart is known far beyond regional borders as a trade fair city, with the Inform Oberwart being one of the most important trade fairs in the region. Economically, the service sector dominates, particularly retail, which attracts customers from the entire surrounding area and nearby Hungary. The demographics are stable, with the city attracting a young population as an educational location with numerous secondary schools. Culturally, Oberwart provides a unique religious and social structure through the coexistence of Catholic, Protestant, and Reformed communities.
