Salto Grande Dam (Argentina)

Weather…

The Salto Grande Dam is a large hydroelectric dam on the Uruguay River, located approximately 15 km north of the cities of Concordia, Argentina, and Salto, Uruguay. It is a binational project, jointly managed by Argentina and Uruguay, and a key piece of energy infrastructure for both nations. Construction began in 1974, and the first turbines became operational in 1979. The power station has a total installed capacity of 1,890 megawatts, generated by 14 Kaplan turbines. The energy produced is shared equally between the two countries. The dam created a large reservoir that is used not only for power generation but also for drinking water supply, irrigation, and recreation. Additionally, the dam serves as a vital transport link, carrying a road and railway bridge across the river, enhancing integration between the two nations. The project is managed by the Comisión Técnica Mixta de Salto Grande (CTM), a binational commission responsible for its operation and maintenance.
