Namibe Plain (Angola)

Weather…

The Namibe Plain is an extensive coastal relief in southwestern Angola, constituting the northernmost reach of the Namib Desert. This arid landscape stretches between the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the foothills of the Chela Mountains to the east. Geologically, the plain consists of Quaternary sand layers, gravel surfaces, and exposed crystalline basement rocks. The climate is extremely dry, influenced by the cold Benguela Current, which prevents rainfall but generates dense coastal fog. These unique conditions have fostered a unique flora, including the famous Welwitschia mirabilis, a living fossil plant that can survive for centuries. Historically, the area opened up with the founding of the city of Moçâmedes (now Namibe) in 1840. The plain is also part of the Iona National Park, Angola's largest nature reserve, which hosts specialized desert fauna. Despite the inhospitable conditions, the region is known for its spectacular dune landscapes and its geological significance as an example of an active desert ecosystem.
