Serra da Leba

Serra da Leba is a dramatic mountain range located on the border of the Huíla and Namibe provinces, famous primarily for its extraordinary mountain pass road. Constructed during the Portuguese colonial era in the 1970s, the road features 56 sharp hairpin turns and descends more than 1,000 meters in elevation over a very short distance, connecting the cool highland plateau of Lubango with the arid coastal plain of Namibe. At the top of the pass, there is a dedicated viewpoint (Miradouro da Serra da Leba) that provides spectacular panoramic views of the twisting asphalt and the plunging valley below. This spot is particularly popular for photography at sunset and at night, when the headlights of passing cars create long light trails. The surrounding landscape transitions rapidly from green, temperate highlands to desert-like conditions. The pass is located about 50 kilometers west of Lubango and is a crucial transportation artery. Visitors typically drive here as a day trip from Lubango or en route to the coastal city of Moçâmedes. The viewpoint is accessible year-round, but clear days without coastal fog provide the best visibility of the engineering marvel below.
