Tundavala Gap

The Tundavala Gap (Fenda da Tundavala) is one of Angola's most awe-inspiring natural landmarks, located just 18 kilometers from the city of Lubango in the Huíla Province. Positioned at the edge of the Huíla plateau, the escarpment abruptly drops nearly 1,000 meters into the Namibe plain below. Standing at the viewpoint, located at over 2,200 meters above sea level, visitors are treated to an expansive, sweeping vista that stretches out toward the Atlantic Ocean on clear days. The sheer cliff faces are a favorite subject for landscape photographers and thrill-seekers alike. The geological formation of the gap provides a unique habitat for various bird species, and eagles can often be seen soaring in the thermal currents along the cliffs. The surrounding landscape features rugged, rocky terrain interspersed with scrubland and endemic flora. Hiking along the cliff edge allows visitors to appreciate the massive scale of the Great Escarpment of Southern Africa. There are no guardrails along most of the edge, so caution is highly recommended when taking photographs or walking near the precipice. Getting to the Tundavala Gap is relatively easy via a paved road from Lubango, taking about 30 minutes by car. The best time to visit is during the early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight casts long shadows across the valley.
