Sant Martí de la Cortinada (Andorra)

Weather…

The Church of Sant Martí de la Cortinada is an exceptional witness to Andorra's cultural development from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period. Originally built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style, the building underwent significant expansions in the 17th and 18th centuries, during which the orientation of the nave was altered to accommodate the growing needs of the parish. Inside, the church houses one of the country's most precious treasures: extensive Romanesque wall paintings by the Master of La Cortinada, depicting religious scenes and mythical creatures. These frescoes were concealed during the Baroque remodeling phase and were only rediscovered and restored in the 20th century. Another highlight is the collection of elaborate 18th-century wrought-iron screens, crafted in local forges, which testify to the superior skill of Andorran blacksmiths. The combination of original Romanesque features, spirited Baroque altarpieces, and robust stone architecture makes Sant Martí one of the most photogenic and historically interesting sites in the parish of Ordino. Surrounded by an idyllic landscape, the church is located directly on the historical Iron Route, reinforcing its significance to regional identity and the nation's spiritual history.
