Vjosa Wild River National Park (Albania)

Weather…

The Vjosa Wild River National Park, officially established in March 2023, is the first national park in Europe dedicated to a free-flowing river system. It protects the entire 270-kilometer Albanian stretch of the Vjosa River, from its entry at the Greek border to its delta on the Adriatic coast. The park's significance lies in its dam-free status, allowing natural hydromorphological processes to occur across its vast network of tributaries and floodplains. Covering over 12,700 hectares, the park provides sanctuary to more than 1,100 species, including the critically endangered Balkan lynx and the Egyptian vulture. The river creates a dynamic landscape of braided channels, gravel bars, and riparian forests that are increasingly rare in Europe. Its designation followed a decade-long international campaign by activists and scientists to halt hydropower development. Currently, the Vjosa serves as a global blueprint for river conservation, offering unique opportunities for scientific study and low-impact ecotourism.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to the protected park areas is typically via the towns of Përmet and Tepelena. Numerous small dirt tracks lead from the national highway toward the expansive river ecosystems.
📅
Best season
Spring and early autumn are generally fantastic for observing migratory birds and lush nature. Summer visits are incredibly popular for experiencing the cool waters amid high regional temperatures.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect to walk along entirely unmanaged environments consisting of shifting gravel banks and floodplains. The terrain is flat but constantly altered by the changing course of the wild river.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality binoculars are recommended for wildlife spotting across the expansive riverbed. Wear durable footwear capable of handling wet gravel, and bring a sufficient supply of drinking water.
🅿️
Parking
Most visitors safely park their vehicles in designated areas within nearby municipalities. Occasionally, broad shoulders along the valley roads serve as convenient, informal parking spots.
⚠️
Safety
Please practice entirely 'leave no trace' principles to protect Europe's last major wild river. Be mindful of sudden drop-offs in the riverbed and avoid crossing areas with fast currents.
⏱️
Time needed
Exploring different ecosystems within the national park usually requires at least three to six hours. Dedicated naturalists frequently spend the entire day documenting the unique biodiversity.
