Tepelena Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Tepelena Castle, also known as the Fortress of Ali Pasha, was completed in 1819 at the strategic confluence of the Vjosa and Drino rivers in southern Albania. Ali Pasha Tepelena commissioned the construction over the remains of an earlier Byzantine fortification to solidify his power base in the Epirus region. The fortress covers an area of approximately 4.5 hectares and is enclosed by massive hewn stone walls that reach heights of up to ten meters. Historically, the interior housed military barracks, administrative offices, and the ruler's private residence, of which ruins still stand today. The architecture exemplifies Ottoman military design of the early 19th century, with its positioning designed to dominate trade routes between the inland territories and the Ionian coast. Today, the castle serves as a significant cultural monument, drawing visitors interested in the era of Ali Pasha and the complex history of Albanian independence movements.
