Memaliaj Coal Mine (Albania)

Weather…

The Memaliaj Coal Mine, located in the Tepelenë District, was one of Albania's most significant industrial centers during the socialist era. The exploration of the deposits began as early as 1918, but large-scale industrial exploitation only commenced after 1946 with state centralization. During the 1970s and 1980s, the mine reached its maximum production capacity, employing several thousand miners and shaping the town of Memaliaj into a typical industrial settlement. The lignite extracted here was primarily used to fuel thermal power plants and supply the country's heavy industry. Following the collapse of the communist regime in 1990, a lack of investment and outdated technology led to a drastic decline in production. Today, most of the facilities are decommissioned, presenting the region with substantial economic and structural challenges.
