Vithkuq is a fascinating historic mountain village near Korçë that, during the 18th century, was regarded as one of the most flourishing cities in the Balkans. At its zenith, it was a preeminent economic and cultural hub, boasting over 24 magnificent Orthodox churches and its own academy. Vithkuq is also celebrated as the birthplace of Naum Veqilharxhi, the scholar who created the first modern Albanian alphabet. Today, the village preserves the evocative ruins of its former grandeur, with the churches of St. Peter and Paul and St. Michael still showcasing masterful post-Byzantine frescoes. Located on a high plateau, it gives crystal-clear springs and invigorating mountain air, making Vithkuq a low-key spot for hikers and history enthusiasts eager to explore the deep Christian heritage of southeastern Albania.
