Ersekë is the administrative center of the Kolonjë region in southeastern Albania, situated at an impressive altitude of about 1020 meters at the foot of the Gramos Mountains. This makes it the highest elevated town in Albania, known for its crisp mountain climate and pristine environment. Historically, the town was a significant cultural hub during the 18th and 19th centuries, producing prominent figures of the Albanian national awakening, such as Petro Nini Luarasi. The town's architecture still bears traces of traditional stonework typical of this high-altitude region. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, particularly apple farming and livestock, as well as traditional crafts like rug making. Despite its remote location, Ersekë maintains a rich heritage of folk music and customs celebrated during regional festivals. The surrounding area features excellent conditions for mountain hiking and alpinism on Mount Gramos, which forms the natural border with Greece.
