Kuturman Managed Nature Reserve (Albania)

Weather…

The Kuturman Managed Nature Reserve is located in central Albania within the Librazhd region, covering an area of approximately 3,600 hectares. The landscape is characterized by a complex mountain relief featuring steep slopes, deep gorges, and numerous mountain streams that feed into the Shkumbin River. Kuturman was designated as a protected area in 1996 to preserve its extensive beech and pine forests as well as its rich alpine flora. The geological structure primarily consists of limestone and igneous rocks, resulting in diverse soil compositions and a varied vegetation cover. The reserve is an important sanctuary for brown bears, wolves, and golden eagles. Due to its location in the Shkumbin valley, it serves as a vital ecological corridor between central Albania and the Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park. The region is also known for traditional mountain pastoralism, which continues in a limited capacity within the buffer zones. The reserve's water resources are of strategic importance for the drinking water supply of the surrounding villages.
