Pëllumbas Cave (Albania)

Weather…

Pëllumbas Cave, also known as the Black Cave (Shpella e Zezë), is a significant archaeological and geological site located near the village of Pëllumbas, about 25 kilometers from Tirana. Stretching approximately 360 meters into the mountain, it sits high above the Erzen River valley. The cave gained international fame following the discovery of skeletal remains of the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), an extinct species that inhabited the area over 10,000 years ago. In addition to paleontological finds, evidence of human settlement dating back to the Paleolithic era has been unearthed, highlighting its long history as a shelter. The interior has impressive limestone formations, including massive stalactites and stalagmites within its expansive chambers. A well-maintained hiking trail leads to the cave, offering wide-open views of the surrounding Erzen Gorge. As a protected natural monument, Pëllumbas Cave serves as a crucial link to understanding prehistoric life and human development in the Balkans.
