Petrelë Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Petrelë Castle perches on a steep rocky hill overlooking the Erzen valley and is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications near the Albanian capital, Tirana. The origins of the site date back to the 6th century when Byzantine Emperor Justinian I established the first defensive works here. The castle acquired its characteristic triangular shape in the 15th century, during which it served as a vital link in the defense system of the national hero Skanderbeg against the Ottoman Empire. Commanded by Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbeg's sister, the fortress acted as a strategic observation post from which signals were transmitted to surrounding strongholds. The massive stone walls and two prominent observation towers testify to the military significance that Petrelë held for centuries. Today, the castle houses a restaurant, offering visitors the chance to dine in a historical setting while enjoying expansive views of the surrounding countryside. The castle is a popular day-trip destination and a significant monument to Albanian resistance and medieval history.
