Dajti National Park (Albania)

Weather…

Dajti National Park spans the mountain massif of the same name east of the Albanian capital Tirana and was officially put under protection as early as 1966. With an area of about 293 square kilometers, the territory features a diverse landscape ranging from dense beech and pine forests to rugged limestone cliffs. The highest point, the summit of Dajti, reaches an elevation of 1,613 meters and is easily accessible to visitors via a modern cable car, the Dajti Ekspres. In the lower altitudes, historical remains such as the Fortress of Dajti are found, bearing witness to the early settlement of the region. The park functions as an important green lung for the nearby metropolis and is home to wildlife such as brown bears, wolves, and golden eagles. Hiking trails lead to panoramic points that, on clear days, allow a view as far as the Adriatic Sea. The preservation of local biodiversity is in the focus of the park management to balance the increasing pressure from tourism. Additionally, the park includes the catchment area of the Bovilla Reservoir, which secures the capital's drinking water supply.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Easily reached from the capital, Tirana, either by taking a scenic ride on the Dajti Ekspres cable car or by driving up the winding mountain road to the park center.
📅
Best season
It is a popular year-round destination; summers offer a refreshing escape from the city heat, while winters often bring a photogenic, if brief, blanket of snow to the higher woods.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The park features a mix of well-maintained recreational areas near the cable car station and more challenging, densely forested trails winding through pine and beech woodlands.
🎒
What to bring
For those walking beyond the main plateau, good hiking shoes and water are generally needed, and a light jacket is wise as temperatures are consistently lower than in Tirana.
🅿️
Parking
Ample parking is typically available at the lower cable car station, and limited spaces can also be found at the upper plateau for those who choose to drive all the way up.
⚠️
Safety
The central areas are very secure, but hikers venturing into deeper forests should remain on marked trails to avoid getting lost and respect the natural habitat of local wildlife.
⏱️
Time needed
Visitors usually spend a half day enjoying the views, dining, and short walks, though covering the extensive forest trails could easily extend the visit to a full day.
