Lura National Park (Albania)

Weather…

Lura National Park is located in northeastern Albania in the Lura mountain range and is famous for its impressive glacial lakes. Originally established in 1966 on a smaller area, the park was expanded in 2018 to become the Lura-Mali i Dejës National Park and now covers around 202 square kilometers. The landscape is characterized by the twelve glacial lakes, of which the Big Lake and the Flower Lake are the most well-known. The region lies at an altitude between 1,000 and 2,119 meters, with the summit of Kunora e Lurës being the highest elevation. Botanically, the park is famous for its black pine and beech forests, although illegal logging in the past threatened the stock. Extensive reforestation projects aim to restore the original ecological splendor. In the fauna, brown bears, lynxes, and roe deer can be found, finding refuge in the remote valleys. The park is a significant destination for ecotourism, offering challenging hiking routes in an almost untouched high mountain landscape.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Entry to the park's interior usually demands starting from nearby regional mountain towns and utilizing extremely rugged dirt roads. Public transportation does not penetrate the park, making independent 4x4 transport or specialized local tours mandatory.
📅
Best season
The summer months are overwhelmingly considered the optimal time for an expedition, offering the clearest weather and most bustling beech forests. From late autumn through early spring, heavy snowfall can render the entire sanctuary inaccessible.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The sanctuary is home to a fiercely rugged topography, featuring deep valleys, steep forested slopes, and the renowned high-altitude glacial depressions. Hiking here means constantly negotiating substantial elevation changes on primitive, untamed trails.
🎒
What to bring
High-grade expedition equipment is non-negotiable, including heavy-duty boots, comprehensive rain gear, and a highly capable first-aid kit. Since facilities are virtually non-existent, carrying comprehensive navigation aids and ample provisions is crucial.
🅿️
Parking
Parking inside the park essentially means finding an adequate clearing off the main dirt track that will not impede other intrepid drivers. Secure vehicle storage is more typically arranged in the gateway towns before the final arduous ascent.
⚠️
Safety
Travelers must remain profoundly vigilant due to the presence of brown bears and the intense isolation from emergency services. Never hike entirely alone, properly manage all food odors, and respect the formidable power of the unpredictable alpine weather.
⏱️
Time needed
A meaningful foray into this wilderness generally spans a grueling full-day trip, though multi-day trekking has the best way to absorb the scale. Rapid visits are fundamentally impossible due to the severely degraded condition of the approach roads.
