Burrel is the administrative center of the Mat District in north-central Albania, situated on a plateau overlooking the Mat River. The city underwent significant industrial expansion during the socialist period, driven primarily by the intensive mining of chromium in the surrounding mountains. Geographically, the area is characterized by rugged karst terrain and deep valleys, which historically isolated the region. Burrel holds historical importance as the ancestral home of the Zogu dynasty; King Zog I, the only monarch of the Albanians, hailed from the nearby Burgajet Castle. Today, the city serves as a regional trade hub for the agricultural communities of the Mat valley. While large-scale mining has decreased, Burrel remains a vital link for transportation between the coastal plains and the eastern mountainous interior.
