The Karavasta Lagoon is the largest lagoon in Albania and one of the most significant wetland ecosystems along the Adriatic coast. It is a centerpiece of the Divjakë-Karavasta National Park, which covers over 22,000 hectares of wetlands, sand dunes, and Mediterranean pine forests. The lagoon is an internationally recognized Ramsar site, serving as a critical sanctuary for the rare Dalmatian pelican, which has established its westernmost European breeding colony here. The ecosystem is defined by a mix of fresh and salt water, as the lagoon is connected to the sea via three channels. A unique feature of the park is the forest of ancient stone pines that grow directly on the coastal dunes. Karavasta Lagoon is a vital waypoint for migratory birds, hosting more than 250 distinct species at various times of the year. Historically, the region has been an important fishing ground, where traditional techniques are still practiced by local communities.

Getting there
The lagoon is easily reached by car from the nearby coastal city of Divjakë. An asphalted road runs directly into the surrounding Divjakë-Karavasta National Park, offering straightforward access.
Best season
For birdwatchers, the spring and autumn migratory seasons are spectacular. Summer gives beautiful weather for general nature walks, though mosquitoes can be very prevalent near the calm waters.
Terrain & paths
The landscape consists of totally flat wooden boardwalks, sandy shorelines, and soft pine forest trails. It is completely accessible and requires very low physical exertion to explore the area.
What to bring
Binoculars are highly recommended to observe the rare pelicans from a distance. Strong insect repellent is vital, along with sun protection and comfortable walking shoes for the sandy pathways.
Parking
A well-established main parking area exists near the park's visitor center, which often charges a small fee. From there, marked trails and observation towers are just a short walk away.
Safety
The area is extremely safe and well-suited for families with small children. Just remember to strictly respect the nesting sites by staying on the marked boardwalks and keeping a quiet profile.
Time needed
Most visitors stay for two to three hours to walk the trails and visit the watchtowers, but one can easily spend half a day combining the lagoon observation with relaxing on the nearby beach.
