Myzeqe Plain (Albania)

Weather…

The Myzeqe Plain is Albania's largest alluvial plain and its most vital agricultural region, stretching along the Adriatic coast between the Shkumbin and Seman rivers. Covering an area of roughly 1,350 square kilometers, it is often referred to as the 'granary of Albania' due to its intensive production of grain, sunflowers, and vegetables. Historically, the plain was largely marshland until extensive reclamation and drainage projects were carried out in the mid-20th century. The region has been significant since antiquity, as evidenced by the nearby ruins of Apollonia, one of the most important Greek and Roman cities in the Balkans. Geologically, the plain is a young formation resulting from centuries of sediment deposition by major river systems. In addition to farming, Myzeqe is the heart of Albania's onshore oil industry, with major extraction sites located near Patos and Marinza. The flat landscape is crisscrossed by an intricate network of irrigation canals that have transformed the once-inhospitable swamps into fertile farmland.
