Divjakë-Karavasta is a Mediterranean ecological gem and Albania’s largest lagoon system. Covering over 222 square kilometers, the national park consists of wetlands, salt marshes, and a legendary pine forest. It is world-renowned as one of the few places where the rare Dalmatian pelican nests; a birdwatching tower provides an incredible 360-degree view of the nesting grounds and the blue horizon. The park is a birdwatcher's paradise, with over 200 species recorded, including flamingos and curly-headed pelicans. The adjacent Divjakë beach is exceptionally wide and famous for its iodine-rich sand and therapeutic mud. Trails wind through the centuries-old pine trees, leading to the edge of the lagoon where traditional wooden fishing weirs can be seen. The area is also famous for its agriculture, producing some of the best watermelons and vegetables in the country. For travelers seeking nature and tranquility, it has a refreshing alternative to the busy coastal cities further north.
