Divjaka-Karavasta National Park is located on the Adriatic coast of central Albania and is one of the country's most important ecosystems. The park was expanded in 2007 to an area of 222 square kilometers and includes the Karavasta Lagoon, the largest lagoon in Albania. The area has been recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance since 1994. The park is particularly known as the most important breeding ground for the rare Dalmatian pelican in Europe. The landscape consists of a mixture of sand dunes, pine forests, and extensive marshlands. The Divjaka Forest is home to centuries-old Mediterranean pines that form a stable protective belt against coastal erosion. In addition to pelicans, tens of thousands of migratory birds rest here annually, making the park a paradise for ornithologists. Local fishermen use the lagoon according to traditional methods, representing an example of sustainable resource use. The park management focuses on promoting ecotourism to harmonize the local economy with nature conservation.

Best season
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the prime birdwatching seasons in Divjaka-Karavasta National Park. Thousands of migratory birds, including pelicans and flamingos, stop over at the lagoons.

Visit the lagoons early morning when birds are feeding and the light is soft. Late afternoon many flocks return to roosting spots, offering spectacular flight displays.

Stay on viewing platforms and marked trails to avoid disturbing waterbirds. Feeding animals is prohibited, and drone use is banned throughout the park.

What to bring
A spotting scope with 20-60x magnification is good for viewing pelicans and flamingos from afar. Don't forget sun protection and plenty of water as the open lagoon features little shade.

Getting there
The park is about 30km west of Lushnjë, accessible via the SH4 road. Follow signs to the visitor centre, where guided tours depart to the best viewpoints.

Birds can be far out on the lagoons - it often pays to stay put for an hour or more. Patience is rewarded by rare species such as the Dalmatian pelican, which occurs regularly here.
