The province is renowned nationwide for the quality and variety of its almonds. In the spring, the blossoming almond trees transform the valleys into a spectacular sea of pink and white flowers, which is a famous attraction. The cultivation of dozens of different local and improved almond varieties forms the economic backbone for many farming families in the region. The harvest takes place in late summer and is a labor-intensive process traditionally carried out by hand. The almond groves of Samangan are known nationwide for their high productivity. The sweet almonds from these orchards are prized as a delicacy and are an important export product of the northern Afghan province.
Visiting
The almond plantations stretch along the valleys around Samangan and are easily recognisable from side roads. During spring bloom, the slopes turn into a pink-white sea of flowers which can be admired from afar.
Where to view it
A good viewpoint is along the road from Samangan to Haibak, where slopes are densely planted with almond trees. The observation terrace of the old Samangan fortress provides an overview of the entire cultivation area.
Local products
Fresh and dried almonds are offered in large quantities in Samangan. Almond oil, salted roasted almonds, and traditional sweets with almond pieces are typical local specialties.

Almond harvest takes place in late summer (August-September) when the fruits ripen. The bloom in March and April is spectacular and draws photographers and nature lovers to the region.
