Samangan province, once a major Buddhist center on the ancient Silk Road, is now one of the leading almond-growing regions in Afghanistan. The province is renowned nationwide for the quality and variety of its almonds. In the spring, the blossoming almond trees transform the valleys into a spectacular sea of pink and white flowers, which is a famous attraction. The cultivation of dozens of different local and improved almond varieties forms the economic backbone for many farming families in the region. The harvest takes place in late summer and is a labor-intensive process traditionally carried out by hand. Almonds are an integral part of Afghan cuisine and culture; they are eaten fresh, roasted, or used as an ingredient in numerous sweet and savory dishes. The sale of the nuts in domestic markets and increasingly for export contributes significantly to the local economy.
