Shahr-e Gholghola (Afghanistan)

Weather…

Shahr-e Gholghola, the 'City of Screams,' is a haunting ruined city perched on a hill opposite the famous Buddha niches in the Bamiyan Valley. Before its destruction, it was a flourishing fortified city and the local center of the Khwarazmian Empire in the early 13th century. Its demise came in 1221 when the Mongol armies under Genghis Khan besieged the region. According to legend, the ruler's daughter betrayed the fortress to the Mongols after her father killed her fiancé. When the city fell, an enraged Genghis Khan, who had lost a grandson during the siege, ordered the complete annihilation of every living thing within the walls, humans and animals alike. The screams of the dying gave the city its macabre name. Today, the mud-brick ruins are a poignant reminder of the brutality of the Mongol conquests and an important archaeological witness to life in this region 800 years ago.
