Mufulira is a prominent mining town located in Zambia's Copperbelt Province, situated very close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The town's name in the local Lamba language means 'Place of Abundance', referring to the rich copper ores that have been extracted here since the 1920s. Officially established in 1933, Mufulira developed around the Mufulira Mine, which houses one of the country's largest copper smelters and refineries. Geographically, the town sits at an elevation of 1,250 meters and serves as a strategic gateway for traffic crossing the Congo Pedicle to the Luapula Province. Mufulira is widely celebrated in Zambia for its sporting heritage, particularly as the home of the Mufulira Wanderers, one of the nation’s most successful football clubs. While heavy industry and the Mopani Copper Mines dominate the economy, the town maintains a strong sense of community and social infrastructure. In recent years, significant environmental upgrades have been implemented at the local smelter to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions and improve air quality for the residents.
