The Al-Qahira Citadel in the city of Hajjah is one of the most significant military fortifications in northern Yemen. While the fortress has pre-Islamic roots, it was extensively rebuilt and reinforced during the 16th century under Ottoman rule. Later, it served as a vital strategic base for the Yemeni Imams and functioned as a high-security state prison for political detainees. The architectural complex includes massive defensive walls, watchtowers, granaries, and deep cisterns designed to sustain the garrison during prolonged sieges. Access to the citadel is gained through winding stone stairways carved directly into the mountain's bedrock. Today, Al-Qahira stands as a landmark of Hajjah Governorate and a testament to the region's turbulent military history involving local dynasties and foreign empires.
