Kaprije is one of the few inhabited islands in Croatia where cars are not allowed. This special feature gives the island a unique, relaxed atmosphere that is rarely found today. The only settlement on the island, also called Kaprije, nestles into a deep bay on the southwest coast. The island got its name from the caper plant, whose buds are traditionally collected here and are an integral part of the local cuisine. Life on Kaprije follows the rhythm of the ferries connecting the island with Šibenik. The island is a Mecca for sailors, as it has numerous protected anchorages. St. Peter's Bay is the main harbor, but around the island, there are many hidden bays with emerald water accessible only on foot or by boat. The sea here is exceptionally clean and rich in fish, making Kaprije popular with divers and snorkelers as well. The landscape is characterized by dry stone walls, olive groves, and vineyards, painstakingly worked into the rocky soil by the residents. There are no large hotels, only private accommodations, which preserves the authentic character. Those who come here seek no animation but long walks on the island paths, the scent of pines and sea salt, and unadulterated Dalmatian cuisine in one of the small konobas at the harbor.
