St. James Cathedral (Croatia)

Weather…

The Cathedral of Saint James in Šibenik is an architectural marvel and one of the most significant Renaissance structures on the entire Adriatic coast. Constructed between 1431 and 1535, it represents the pivotal transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance style. The most extraordinary feature of this cathedral is that it was built entirely of stone from the islands of Brač, Korčula, and Rab, utilizing no mortar or wooden binding elements. The renowned architect Juraj Dalmatinac was instrumental in its design, notably creating the exterior frieze featuring 71 sculpted heads depicting ordinary citizens of the time. The roof consists of interlocking stone slabs, a structural technique that was revolutionary for its era. Since 2000, the cathedral has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It withstood the Croatian War of Independence despite sustaining several hits and was subsequently meticulously restored.
