Laguna de Rocha (Uruguay)

Weather…

Laguna de Rocha is a coastal lagoon located in the Rocha Department of Uruguay, part of the Bañados del Este UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It covers an area of approximately 72 square kilometers and is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a sandbar that seasonally opens and closes. This dynamic exchange between fresh and salt water creates a unique and highly productive ecosystem. The lagoon is internationally recognized as an Important Bird Area, providing habitat for over 220 species of birds, including the threatened black-necked swan, flamingos, and various migratory birds. It is also vital to the local economy, particularly for artisanal shrimp fishing, which provides a sustainable livelihood for local communities. The surrounding wetlands and grasslands support cattle ranching. Due to its ecological significance, Laguna de Rocha was incorporated into Uruguay's National System of Protected Areas (SNAP) in 2015, ensuring its conservation for future generations.
