Fort of San Miguel (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Fort of San Miguel is a historic military fortification located in the Rocha Department, Uruguay, near the border with Brazil. Originally built by the Portuguese in 1734 as a simple earthwork, it was expanded into a more robust stone fortress in 1737 to secure their territorial claims against the Spanish. However, the fort was captured by the Spanish in 1763, who completed its construction. The fort has an irregular quadrangular plan with four bastions at its corners. It was built using local pink granite, which gives it its distinctive appearance. After losing its strategic importance in the 19th century, it fell into ruin but was extensively restored in the 1930s under the direction of historian Horacio Arredondo. Today, it is a major historical site and tourist attraction. It houses a museum of military history, displaying a collection of uniforms, weapons, and maps from the colonial era. The fort is part of the San Miguel National Park and gives insight into 18th-century military architecture and border conflicts in the region.
