La Coronilla
La Coronilla is a haven for those seeking peace and a deep connection with nature along the Atlantic coast. The resort is well-known for the Karumbé project, which focuses on the protection of green sea turtles that frequent its waters. The vast, wild beaches offer a sense of freedom and isolation, excellent for long walks or quiet contemplation. It is one of the most serene destinations in the Rocha department, maintaining a low-key, family-friendly atmosphere. Nature is the main attraction here, with nearby wetlands providing excellent birdwatching opportunities. La Coronilla serves as a great base for visiting the Santa Teresa National Park, home to a historic fortress and diverse flora. The coastline is characterized by its untouched beauty and gentle dunes. The sea is often visited by local fishermen, adding to the authentic coastal feel of the village. The night sky here is exceptionally clear, handy for stargazing. The local cuisine features fresh Atlantic fish and seafood, often caught the same day. Getting there is easy via Route 9 from Montevideo, and it is located just a short drive from the Brazilian border at Chuy. The best time to visit is during the summer (December to February) for beach activities, while spring is convenient for seeing the sea turtles and enjoying the blooming natural landscape.
