Bañados del Este Wetlands (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Bañados del Este (Eastern Wetlands) is a vast mosaic of wetlands spreading over 3,200 square kilometers in eastern Uruguay, covering the departments of Rocha, Treinta y Tres, and Cerro Largo. Designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1976, it is one of the most important wetlands in South America. The reserve encompasses a variety of ecosystems, including freshwater lagoons, salt marshes, swamps, palm groves, and coastal dunes. This diversity of habitats supports an exceptional level of biodiversity. It is a crucial stopover point for millions of migratory birds traveling along the Neotropical Flyway. The area is also home to a significant population of the Pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus), one of South America's most endangered mammals. Other notable species include the maned wolf and the capybara. The conservation of Bañados del Este is vital for maintaining regional biodiversity, regulating water flow, and supporting local communities through sustainable practices like cattle ranching.

Best season
The best period for birdwatching is the southern spring (September to December) when many migratory birds are present. In the summer months of January to March, waterbirds are most active.

Best time of day
Morning hours are convenient when birds become active after the night. Late afternoon also sees the wetlands full of life before dusk sets in.
