Laguna Merín (Uruguay)

Weather…

Laguna Merín, known in Brazil as Lagoa Mirim, is a massive coastal lagoon located on the border between Uruguay and Brazil's southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul. Covering an area of approximately 4,250 square kilometers, it is the second-largest lagoon in South America. It is about 185 kilometers long and up to 37 kilometers wide. The lagoon is connected to the even larger Laguna de los Patos to the north by the São Gonçalo Channel. However, unlike Laguna de los Patos, Laguna Merín has no direct outlet to the Atlantic Ocean. Its waters are predominantly fresh, fed by several rivers, the largest of which is the Jaguarão (Yaguarón) River. The lagoon's surroundings are of great ecological and economic importance. The area is a designated Ramsar Wetland, supporting a rich biodiversity of birds, fish, and other wildlife, making it a vital habitat for conservation. Economically, the region around Laguna Merín is Uruguay's most important rice-growing area. The abundant fresh water from the lagoon and its tributaries is used to irrigate the extensive rice paddies that constitute a major part of Uruguay's agricultural exports.
