Varash is a vital industrial hub located in the Rivne Oblast of northwestern Ukraine, situated along the banks of the Styr River. Established in 1973 as Kuznetsovsk to support the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant, the city was renamed in 2016 to honor its historical roots during the national decommunization process. The local economy and social structure are almost entirely dependent on the nuclear energy sector, which provides employment for the majority of its 42,000 residents. The urban layout represents a classic example of late Soviet planned architecture, featuring wide streets, high-density residential blocks, and integrated green belts. Varash serves as a critical component of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, hosting specialized technical colleges and research facilities dedicated to nuclear power operations. Beyond its industrial significance, the city is located within the pristine forests and marshes of the Polissia region, offering unique ecological surroundings. Its development continues to be driven by the modernization of its power generating capacities and its role as a strategic center for national energy security.
