Boryslav is a unique industrial city in the Lviv Oblast, situated at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains and globally recognized as one of the oldest centers of the petroleum industry. First mentioned in 1387, the city rose to international prominence in the mid-19th century following the discovery of vast deposits of oil and ozokerite (earth wax). During the 1860s, Boryslav experienced an 'oil rush' that transformed it into the energy powerhouse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. By the early 20th century, this region accounted for roughly 5% of global oil production. The city's industrial grit and the struggles of its workers are famously documented in the literature of Ivan Franko. A distinctive feature of Boryslav is the integration of oil pumps directly within residential neighborhoods, gardens, and public parks. Today, the city focuses on chemical manufacturing and tourism, leveraging its proximity to the Truskavets spa resort. It remains the only city in the world built directly atop an active oil and gas field, preserving a rich array of industrial monuments and mining museums.
